Most of us know that good nutrition is important to stay healthy and avoid illness. But what many of us may not know is that optimal nutrition is also important for a healthy back. The complex system of muscles, nerves and bones in the back requires its own set of vitamins and nutrients to stay strong and perform its important functions. If you have been experiencing back problems, you may want to consider increasing the amounts of the following vitamins and nutrients in your diet.

Vitamin B12 promotes healthy bone marrow and contributes to healthy spine growth and function. Sources: Leafy greens, fish, eggs, red meant, liver, broccoli, kale, milk, and cheese.

Vitamin A is an antioxidant that aids in the formation of bone and helps repair tissue. Sources: Orange fruits, like nectarines, apricots, and cantaloupe; orange vegetables, including carrots and sweet potatoes; liver and dairy products; spinach.

Vitamin K helps the bones properly utilize calcium. Sources: pork, liver, green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and broccoli, and dairy products.

Vitamin D
aids in calcium absorption, which helps the body develop strong, healthy bones. It is particularly important for the prevention of osteoporosis. Sources: Milk, eggs, fish oil, sunlight.

Magnesium helps maintain bone density and muscle tone to help support the spine. Sources: Whole grains, seeds, nuts, beans, shrimp, bananas, kiwi, leafy green vegetables.
