Massage for Mothers-To-Be

03.03.2010 / In Massage / by Alliance Staff

No one is more deserving of massage than mothers-to-be. And no one needs it more. Carrying the weight of a baby around is tough work, not to mention all the hormonal changes that are going on in the body causing aches, pains, mood changes, and sleeplessness. Studies show that regular massage therapy during pregnancy can relieve these symptoms, improve labor and the health of the newborn.

Hormone Regulation
Massage therapy works to balance hormones related to relaxation and stress and can help to regulate mood and improve cardiovascular health in pregnant women. Studies show that regular prenatal massage can reduce levels of cortisol and norepinephrine–stress hormones–and increase levels of seratonin and dopamine, which are responsible for good mood. These changes in hormone levels resulted in fewer labor complications and birth complications including low birth weight.

Reduction of Nerve Pain
In late pregnancy, sciatic pain is a common problem because the uters puts pressure on the pelvic floor and low back. This also spreads to the legs, causing swelling and nerve pain. Regular massage has been show to greatly reduce the pain and swelling caused by the tension and inflamed nerves.

Reduction of Swelling
Swelling of the joints is also a common occurrence during pregnancy, and is often the result of poor circulation and pressure of the uterus on the major blood vessels. Massage stimulates the joints and leads to a reduction in fluid collection and improves the body's tissue waste removal.

Although most licensed massage therapists receive training in prenatal massage therapy, it is important to find a therapist who has who has a lot of experience in prenatal massage. He or she will know the best position for the individual and will be aware of sensitive pressure points in the body that should be avoided. Keep in mind that massage is often not recommended for women in their first trimester, due to the increased risk of miscarriage.
