A Bit About Chinese Herbs

06.10.2010 / In Ask Dr Viv, Massage, Acupuncture, Health, Nutrition / by Alliance Staff

Long before there was Western medicine, complex surgical procedures and giant pharmaceutical companies, ancient civilizations treated illness and disease with all natural herbs. China is one of the oldest practitioners of herbal medicine, and many people--both Western and Asian--choose to use Chinese herbs over Western treatments to heal everything from acne to cancer. There are hundreds of varieties of herbs to treat thousands of conditions. Here are a few common ones you can find in your local health fod store.

Astragalus

Also known as Huang qi, Astragalus is a member of the Fabaceae family, a bean family. It is a perennial legume that grows in northern and eastern China and in parts of Mongolia in well-drained, sandy soil with plenty of sun. The root of the astragalus plant is dried and used to boost immunity, including resistance to infections and allergies. It is often combined with other herbs like echinacea and ginseng.

Goji Bery

There are many species of the goji berry plant growing all over Asia, including more than 40 in Tibet. The goji berry plant is a tall shrub that grows 8 to 10 feet and bears small, bright red fruit. The fresh or dried berries are the part of the plant that is used most often, and that is most highly praised for its healing power. But other parts of the plant also are used in medicine or as a vegetable. The berries are thought to be effective in treating problems of the skin, kidney, eye and liver, as well as diabetes, tuberculosis, insomnia and anxiety. The root bark can be used to treat coughs, and to lower fevers, cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Dong Quai

Dong Quai is a member of the Apiaceae family and grows mainly in Japan, China and Korea. It is an easily recognizable fragrant perennial herb with clusters of small, white flowers. Chinese herbalists use the root of the plant to treat menstrual issues in women, as well as high blood pressure. Dong quai also has mild sedative effects.

Burdock

Burdock is native to many parts of the world including Asia. It is easily recognized for its prickly head and bright purple flowers. It is a very hearty plant that can grow under many different conditions. The seeds, leaves and roots are all used for medicinal purposes in teas, juices, powders and capsules. Burdock root is effective at soothing gastrointestinal discomfort, in the treatment and prevention of acne, fever reduction, detoxification and as an antibacterial and antifungal agent.
