Supplements to Improve Memory

06.29.2010 / In Ask Dr Viv, Health, Nutrition / by Alliance Staff

It is natural for all individuals to experience memory loss as they age. In most people it happens gradually; but with some illnesses, such as Alzheimer's, memory loss can happen quite quickly. Memory loss can also be the result of taking certain types of medications, mental illness, such as anxiety, improper thyroid function, and high blood pressure. If you experience memory loss due to illness or medication, a conversation with your doctor is the first step you should take. Individuals experiencing memory loss due to advancing age may benefit from taking one or a combination of the following supplements.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-carnitine is derived from the amino acid L-carnitine and is chemically modified to make it more easily absorbed by the brain. Acetyl-L-carnitine helps produce the energy necessary for healthy brain function. According to Progressive Health, individuals with benign memory loss, i.e., those who are not suffering from Alzheimer's disease, "almost always benefit from the supplement". Acetyl-L-carnitine has few side effects but may interact negatively with some medications, including anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, zidovudine, penicillin derivatives, and valproic acid, so it is best to consult with a physician before taking it.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is an important component of the membranes that line nerve cells, which decreases as we age. Supplementation with phosphatidylserine may promote the regrowth of nerve networks in the brain, in Alzheimer's patients and those suffering from age-related memory loss, according to Progressive Health. Several studies have shown improvement in cognitive ability and behavior in Alzheimer's sufferers, however improvements were short-lived - up to a few months- and were observed only in those individuals with the mildest symptoms, according to Mayo Clinic.

B Vitamins

B vitamins play an important role in keeping nerve cells healthy and in producing red bloods cells, which carry oxygen to the brain - a necessary nutrient for memory. According to Mayo Clinic, a deficiency of vitamin b can result in memory loss, which is why it is important to maintain healthy levels of b vitamins in the system. Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid are most important for brain function and memory and can be found naturally in foods like dark leafy greens, strawberries, melons, citrus fruits, broccoli, and fish, meat, and poultry.
