The body builds up toxins from the foods you eat, medicines you take, substances like alcohol and caffeine, and the air you breathe. A build-up of toxins in the system can result in illness, sluggish digestion, a lack of energy and other health problems. Every once in a while, it's a good idea to follow a detoxification program, which helps to remove toxins and clean the digestive system. This simple plan focuses on clean eating and hydration.
- Eat only raw fruits and vegetables for breakfast, lunch and dinner for seven days. Choose organic items when possible to reduce the amount of chemicals you ingest. Good vegetable choices include carrots, bell peppers, dark leafy greens, celery, cucumber and sprouts. Good fruit choices include bananas, oranges, blueberries, mangoes, lemons, apples and pears. Make dairy-free smoothies, salads and cold soups.
- Drink at least six to eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day. Drink as much water as you need to feel full. Squeeze some lemon into your water to make it more satisfying.
- Allow yourself two snacks per day in-between meals. A piece of fruit or some cut-up vegetable sticks are a good choice.
- Drink two or three cups of green tea throughout the day for extra cleansing benefits and as a break from water. You can use a little bit of raw honey to sweeten your tea if necessary.
- Cook 1/2 cup of organic brown rice for dinner each night and eat it with your choice of fruits and vegetables. Brown rice is a good source of fiber and will help you feel a bit more satiated in the evening.
- Perform 30 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Do not exercise intensely as your body will be lacking some of the proteins, carbohydrates and fats it needs to fuel a tough workout. You can resume normal workouts after the detox is over.
- Refrain from drinking alcohol and caffeine and do not smoke or engage in other substance use during the seven-day detox. If you take prescription medications, continue to take those as prescribed.
