Low-Estrogen Diet May Boost Weight Loss

04.22.2011 / In Nutrition / by Alliance Staff

Estrogen is a female hormone produced naturally in the bodies of both males and females. At normal levels, estrogen positively effects the reproductive system, mood, energy levels and libido. Higher levels of estrogen can contribute to unwanted side effects, such as breast cancer, lower sperm counts in men and weight gain in both men and women. Estrogen-related weight gain is more common as people age. Many of the foods we eat today contain more estrogen than the body needs and lead to weight gain and metabolic disorders. Reducing these foods in your diet can help you lose weight. Here are a few ways you can change your diet that may help you lose the belly bulge:

Eliminate pre-packaged, refined and processed conventional foods from your diet. These foods contain ingredients, such as trans fats, that can drive estrogen levels sky-high.

Choose organic produce grown without chemicals and pesticides, which studies have shown may increase estrogen levels.

Reduce your intake of dairy, meat and poultry and choose only products produced without chemicals or growth hormones. Whenever possible, buy free-range or grass-fed, which is more nutritious and less likely to influence the body's hormone levels.

Eat foods that aid in detoxification, which will help to eliminate excess estrogen from your system. These foods include organic fruits and vegetables, organic yogurt, beans and whole grains.

Consume more anti-estrogenic foods, such as cruciferous vegetables -- broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage -- citrus fruits, nuts and avocados.

Eat more fermented soy products such as tofu, tempeh, miso and soy sauce, which studies have shown help to reduce estrogen levels.
