Drink Up: Neem Tea

04.28.2011 / In Herbal Remedies / by Alliance Staff

The neem tree is indigenous to India, where it grows in abundance in evergreen forests. The oil extracted from various parts of the tree has been used for thousands of years in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat a wide range of internal and external health issues. Drinking tea made with the leaves of the neem plant may yield numerous health benefits.

Immune-Boosting

The leaves and bark of the neem tree used to make tea contain a host of nutrients and antioxidants that help kill harmful bacteria in the body and strengthen the immune system so that the body can fight off infection from colds and flus and other conditions related to the immune system, such as herpes. Drinking neem tea daily may prevent infections, or the tea can be drunk as needed to clear infections.

Cough Supressant

Sipping or gargling with neem tea several times a day helps calm irritated throats, suppressing coughs and soothing sore throats. Oils from the neem leaves coat the the throat and promote healing.

Cancer Prevention

Neem leaves are rich in antioxidants that may help fight the free radicals that contribute to cancer. Drinking neem daily provides a healthy dose of cancer-fighting antioxidants that may decrease your chances of getting cancer, but there is no medical evidence to support this claim.

Digestive Health

Neem oil is antibacterial, helping to destroy bacteria that causes illness. When consumed as tea, the neem oil enters the intestinal tract and may help kill off potentially harmful bacteria that causes stomach upset, poor digestion and constipation.

Fever Reduction

Neem has traditionally been used as a fever-reducer in India for centuries. According to an experimental study, neem may help reduce and eliminate fevers better than aspirin. Bring neem tea to room temperature before administering for fever.
