10 Ways to Lower Your Stress Level, Part II

Jody Braverman

Expanding on last week’s post, here are some more ways to lower your stress level. Even if you’re not feeling stressed out, taking preventative measures can help you deal better with stress when it hits, lessening its harmful effects.

Learn to say no: If you tend to take on too much at one time and find yourself feeling overwhelmed, then chances are you need to say no more often. It’s ok to say no, if it will reduce some of the stress in your life. Once you learn that and put it into practice, you’ll feel a lot better.

Make time for yourself: If your life revolves around your family calendar, there’s probably little time left over for you to enjoy some alone time. Unfortunately, that time won’t make itself, so you have to make it. Set aside a few hours a week, at least, to do something that you want to do, whether it be reading a book, or taking a walk.

Get a massage: Massage releases stressed muscles and stressed minds. Treat yourself to a weekly or monthly massage. If you’re a multi-tasker, you can kill two birds with one stone by getting a massage during your alone time.

Talk it out: Talking to a good friend or counselor about the stress in your life can be a good way to work through it and get on the right track to leading a calmer, less stressful lifestyle.

Laugh: Make sure you laugh often and hard. Laughter is a wonderful way to relieve stress and help you forget about all the things you have to do. Watch a funny movie or talk to a friend who makes you laugh. You can even laugh at yourself!
