Several studies that have appeared in well-known journals over the last few years have confirmed acupuncture’s efficacy in helping people, including those who are significantly overweight, lose body fat. In control groups, individuals who received just acupuncture, and those who received acupuncture in combination with diet and exercise, lost more body weight than those who either did nothing, received a placebo, or followed a diet and exercise plan alone.
Weight gain and obesity are complicated conditions with no single cause or simple solution. The rationale behind the use of acupuncture in weight loss is that disturbed energy flow through the hypothalamus is behind many of the symptoms and behaviors that can lead to weight gain and obesity. The hypothalamus is basically the brain’s control center, responsible for regulating everything from hormones and neurochemicals to controlling body temperature and hunger and thirst.
Experts agree that because of its ability to regulate the hormonal imbalances that may lead to weight gain, and because it can control appetite, curb cravings, treat depression, boost metabolism and provide benefits in many other areas that lead to weight gain and failed weight loss attempts, acupuncture can be a powerful partner in a weight loss strategy that includes diet and exercise. When seeking acupuncture treatment for weight loss, be sure to find a practitioner with experience in acupuncture for weight loss. Also be sure to complete a full course of treatment, which will be determined by you and your acupuncturist. Lastly, remember that acupuncture is most effective when combined with lasting lifestyle changes, including a plan for making a healthy diet and regular exercise a part of your daily life.
